After its last accident, the Deuce has been completely rebuilt and is finally ready for trials once again, starting with ground checkouts to ensure all is well before moving into flight testing

Deuce crash prelim report, Mk5 flight overview for this week's bit.ly/OpsSummary9-18… - everyone relax this weekend you all earned it!!

Genesis has ordered the parts for new Deuce engine pods, in a few more days structural analysis completes to see what else needs replacing
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Deuce engines have been hauled up from nearly a kilometer of water so they can be inspected for any mechanical failures during landing

if anything, 280 chars per tweet simply means we can use less acronyms & abbreviations. Have never felt we needed more room to communicate
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
despite the Deuce crash, pitch stability was *definitely* improved as seen by the much smoother flight path of the more recent flight test
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
C7 still has to determine the roll issue but there are certainly no plans to scrap Deuce development, it's almost a solid design like Civvie

Weeeeeeekeeeennnddd!! Also month end! Everyone is excited for all the cool stuff Oct will bring. But first, a recap! bit.ly/OpsSummary9-25…
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Deuce will undergo an entire overhaul, with only the tail section still OK for flight & even that is going to be rebuilt w/rest of aircraft
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
crash investigation is still ongoing so we won't have a full report til that has been resolved but C7 estimates ~2mo until Deuce flies again
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Genesis & C7 have released the Deuce crash report along with future plans for reassembly & an updated blueprint: bit.ly/Genesis-PR10
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
tl;dr Jeb at fault but only from lack of experience, no big design changes, rebuild will take 2 months to make very sure assembly is correct
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
HAB crew had a good 1st day starting to *very carefully* build the new Deuce prototype. They expect to be finished sometime in mid-January
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Deuce's cabin section, the core of the entire aircraft, has been completed. Now it's time to start building outwards, starting with the tail section then the wings over the next month
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
work on the new Deuce prototype has been going well and is on track to be finished by mid-Jan 2018 for flight testing to resume. It has been meticulously built to a standard never before seen to attempt to alleviate weird control issues that plagued the original prototype
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
it's not just the buildings getting attention at KSC, we are refurbishing both the turf & dirt runways 09/27 as well as bringing back turf Rwy01/19 compacted once earlier this year for permanent use moving forward
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
the rebuilt Deuce is undergoing final checkouts this week, which will culminate in a ground test early this Friday followed by a flight test later that day if all goes well. Both Jeb & Val will be at the controls this time
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
piloting the Deuce earlier today Jeb and Val successfully landed after one of their engines shredded itself and a piece of propeller tore off part of their right rear stabilizer....... in the simulator 🙂 Yep, they are being trained hard!
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Jeb & Val are psyched to board the real thing tomorrow after spending so much time in the sim. Turning the original Deuce cockpit into a full-motion simulator has been an awesome tool - the primary reason we feel comfortable allowing both to operate for these trials
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
photographed a little while ago Jeb & Val are already boarded up for preflight, crews rolled the Deuce out with sunrise. Even though there won't be a flight this day cycle, weather is great and expected to hold all day
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
preflight complete, each PT6 engine has been started up and checked individually. A series of throttle run-up checks will now be conducted, the vessel is chocked to allow continuous monitoring of high thrust settings
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
engine data collection complete, everything is running fine so next up ground roll tests will allow differential & reverse thrust checks of the engines while the undercarriage begins its checkouts
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Captain Jeb is in the left seat for these trials in command of the aircraft while Commander Valentina monitors readouts, calls out checks and ensures good data collection from the right seat but is able to assume control if needed
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
taxiing around the tarmac and out on the dirt runway Jeb says the handling feels loose but hasn't noted any serious issues. Heading down to the turf runway the crew will begin passes down & back, gradually working up to takeoff speed (~70m/s)
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
getting up to around 30m/s Jeb reports the main gear are wanting to steer the plane off to the side - tail wheel is off the ground at this point and rudder authority is barely enough to hold it in line
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
additional testing up towards 50m/s has shown enough lift to remove stress from gear and allow rudder to straighten things out easier but Jeb remains concerned. Flight agrees & has waived off further takeoff run-up tests, moving on now to various flight systems
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
Bob & Bill finished up their KerBalloon probes for next week, went out to watch the trials. Bob snapped this photo from the side of the taxiway as Jeb allowed Val to taxi back to the HAB and conclude trials for this day cycle
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
back in the HAB for its post-trial maintenance checkouts and some control/suspension adjustments per Cpt Jeb's observations, Deuce will be rolled out again at 3rd sunrise for flight trials if C7 finds data review satisfactory
Kerbal Space Agency
@KSA_MissionCtrl
C7 have decided they need more time to review today's data, especially in light of observed undercarriage issues. Deuce flight trials have been pushed back to 3rd sunrise Monday pending good ground checks earlier on the day
