Deuce Science Flight 1

Commander Valentina andΒ Captain Jebediah embark on the Deuce’s first official contract mission to surveyΒ Zone 76-CV5 andΒ Sector PH2W7C while testing newly-installed science instruments. Their return to KSC is endangered by uncooperative landing gear

HAB crews discovered more tire wear than expected on the Deuce and rubber marks in the wheel wells - they will be recommending brakes be applied before gear is retracted. Thankfully this was caught before any blowouts occurred

fired up and ready to go, Val is Pilot in Command of this flight and has been granted taxi and takeoff clearance for Rwy09, skies mostly cloudy with winds light and variable

no issues on departure, Deuce is "cleaned up" (flaps & gear retracted) and climbing for 2.5km on course to bit.ly/Sector_PH2W7C. In the right seat, Jeb as co-pilot mainly handles communications and navigation

leveled off at 2.5km traveling ~138m/s now already almost 80km from KSC Jeb has signed off as they drop below the horizon. They have ~452km to travel before they are back at KSC, so we expect to hear from them again in no more than an hour or so

we have contact with the Deuce as Jeb & Val clear the mountains to the west, data download looks like their flight went according to plan. Val will begin her descent shortly to setup for a straight-in approach to Rwy09, winds still mostly calm & skies clearer

Val called a Go-around on final approach as only one green light lit up in the cockpit after the gear lever was dropped. Visual inspection out her window confirmed the left-side gear did not deploy. They are climbing out as per abort procedure & then will work the problem

coming around to the north for a pattern approach, single gear was retracted okay & another attempt will be made on final to actuate both gear using the main lever

Go-around #2. Same scenario, although this time Val held on her approach longer while Jeb attempted to use the manual pump. The gear did deploy but no light still in cockpit, meaning it likely did not lock & could collapse on landing

after climbing out to reset her approach Val has shut down, feathered & locked the left engine so the prop will remain clear of the ground. She will land with one engine and hope the gear holds on touchdown. Emergency crews are rushing out to stand by near the runway

turning onto final, this is Val's first ever landing with one engine outside of the sim, but Jeb has done this already & is right beside her with advice, also ready to take control if Val feels she's not up to it

rescue & fire vehicles rushing to the Deuce, which spun and slid off to the side of the runway, no smoke coming from the aircraft & both pilots have already evacuated out the main cabin doors. Wow, what an incredible landing!

Jeb & Val are being inspected by the medics. Gear did collapse, but Val used the ailerons & rudder to keep the aircraft banked onto the good gear until about 20m/s when the left wing finally dropped into the dirt and dug in, spinning the aircraft around and off to the side

both crew have been cleared by the medical team, Genesis engineers already out to survey the damage to the aircraft so they can decide how to get it towed back to the HAB. Obviously tomorrow's flight will have to be rescheduled. We are glad everyone is okay!!

HAB crew want to buy Val a round at the canteen, say aircraft damage is minor and they hope to have her fixed up in a few days. Hydraulic leak has been found and will be repaired. ASA says it will not open a formal crash investigation
