Ascension Mk1 Flight 10 (Captain Jebediah)

Captain Jeb is more than ready to finally take his ride up to space to fly a similar mission to the previous flight by Commander Val however we discover that we have enemies bent on destroying all we hope to accomplish…

our high-alt KerBalloon crew is back, partially successful since they failed to recover 1 of the 2 balloons. Why they failed however is amazing news - they were attacked by an unknown group of kerbals that ambushed them from caves near the landing site!

official search and rescue efforts were suspended today, making this the first ever aviation disappearance - no airship/craft as ever gone unaccounted for. Some private pilots have pledged to continue the search - which is entirely over land so the crash site must be *somewhere*

the missing Deuce aircraft remains an aviation mystery - no trace has been found. The best theory accepted by most is the crew got lost, ran out of fuel and crashed. So it could be way, way out of the search area where it had planned to fly

Jeb's Ascension Mk1 was integrated with its engine last week and will go vertical today in the VAB so the capsule can be lifted up, placed on top and load checks carried out on the decoupler and heat shield. It's always best to find problems before launching...

the decoupler's main job is actually to hold the capsule away from the fuel tank during ascent - the force of it atop the tank alone would crush it. The decoupler has strong cross-braces that sit under the capsule & distribute stress to the tank sides, which are strongest twitter.com/Otherdude4566/…

so it's not actually holding the capsule down on its own very much. If it fails to release automatically and the manual release also fails, the LES push motors have enough force to yank the capsule free once the rocket is in space

with enough data from re-entries of the Mk1 capsule, Ascension engineers have been able to model the possibility of using the 4 LES push motors as a last-ditch attempt at survivable recovery should the chutes completely malfunction. Result: probably not

the procedure would be to drop the heat shield & vent all remaining cold gas to reduce mass. Next the flotation device would be deployed to create more drag (tho it could possibly rip apart). Finally the push motors would be fired just before impact

impact speeds would likely still be too high however, beyond the tolerance of the capsule to withstand unless it were built to do so, which would add too much mass. Instead we are looking into a slightly more powerful LES tower - still adds more mass but not as much

TL;DR (it is a lot to take in) - our current stance is to work to determine all the details of how this attack was carried out and put in place measures to prevent future attempts. We are not backing down nor is any action yet able to be taken against those responsible

we have released our own video of the Deuce that flew into the Ascension Mk1. Monitoring cameras were activated once fueling operations began. It came in lights off & engines off - there was no warning & only the automated LES saved Jeb's life

video was adjusted for brightness & contrast but it all still happens pretty fast - aircraft comes gliding in from the left @ upwards of 100m/s & Jeb's capsule goes flying off to the right (you can make out the LES motors firing)

.@mrtagnan there's no radar coverage until the tracking vessel comes on station later in the count. We've only cared about range issues for a rocket going up & hitting something, not the other way around. They chose their window of attack wisely. This is why we are now building our own radar station

we’re not sure yet how we would retaliate given how fortfied they’ve already shown themselves to be (recall they almost shot down an airship). While we figure out our options we are taking greater security measures to prevent or at least mitigate any future attack attemps twitter.com/Zvedagrad/stat…

all of our astronaut crew have been cleared in their psychiatric evaluations, although Bob says he really didn't need more to be anxious about. Jeb told him not to worry, he's not about to let him rotate into command next mission and wants another shot at space soon

KSC remains shut down but a team is onsite this week collecting debris from the launch pad so the ASA can begin to determine the origins of the aircraft based on the parts that are recovered. A lot remains intact, including the cabin & body of the unidentified pilot

the radome has been completed on the tall hills west of KSC and will be hooked up to the Tracking Station by tomorrow, which means we can return to KSC next week! Due to security, it's tough working remotely for engineering and R&D teams w/o full file access

our astronaut crew is each spending the weekend at a cavern (Sheltered Rock, Ockr, Kravass, Umbarg) participating in science outreach programs to show that we will not cower in fear of threats to our goal of space exploration. Still, we did send along security details

we've been seeing various news reports questioning the fact that only a single crew member was found in the Deuce wreckage. While the Deuce is a multi-crew aircraft it can in fact be flown by a single kerb. The advantages of multi-crew in safety is why most aren't flown that way

KNN reported a leak from the ASA investigation into the wreckage of the Deuce that crashed into our launch pad: conclusive evidence has been found that it is the plane reported missing earlier this year. The remains of the sole occupant who piloted the plane have yet to be ID'd

we have no official statement to give in response - we have cooperated with the ASA in giving them access to the aircraft debris from the launch pad but that is the extent of our involvement. Lots of questions tied to this revelation will certainly take more time to answer

the Air Safety Administration has confirmed it completed its investigation into the Deuce crash but has more work to do with law enforcement officials before the report can be released - hopefully by the end of this week

huge break in the criminal investigation into the attack on KSC just announced by KNN - the airship crew that was scheduled to be flying by the exiled Monolithic followers at the time of first contact have at last been found hiding in an abandoned cavern & rounded up

these kerbs went missing months ago but the link between them and the exiles was not made until after recent events, and they will likely be able to give up more associates in the ring of religious followers who initially re-established contact with the exiles

up until now the crew service tower has also acted as a lightning rod but the Ascension Mk2 can rise taller so rods have been installed around the pad to protect it from any hazardous weather. Yes, they are also sunk several meters into the ground & will stop an aircraft
