KerBalloon missions were as numerous as last year and mission time was nearly doubled on average as surface expeditions became more far-flung & long-lasting. The successful use of orbital comms tested this year has everyone excited to really open up surface exploration in 2021

as you can see, Kerbin II does travel away from the expedition site & is not able to communicate every pass. In general the ground teams have 5-8 mins during 5 windows ~35min apart, then a ~3hr wait for the start of the next 5-window pass

Badlands expedition going well, here is a low-alt balloon being released near the center of what is now even more strongly believed to be a caldera. There doesn't appear to be any active vents or geysers but if gas is escaping into the air the instruments aboard will detect it

KerBalloon crews have shipped out from Umbarg aboard airships carrying the expedition out to the Badlands. They will pick up supplies shipped earlier to DSN Central then head down to spend a month researching the suspected caldera, releasing 3 low & 5 hi-alt balloons

unlike a previous mission where just the small KB crew used Kerbin II to stay in touch with a nearby support base, this large expedition will be more remote, carry a lot more support but also cover a wider area and be able to stay in direct contact with spread out teams as well

successful return of the low-alt KerBalloon crew today as their ship pulled into port in Umbarg. They are excited to plan their next mission with the high-alt crew and continue to take advantage of Kerbin II to reach locations previously not as feasible

latest report from the low-alt KB crew is that they made it back to the boat okay, however the second release failed when the balloon refused to inflate due to damage that likely occurred during transit. Uncommon, but always an unfortunate possibility

KB crew just rolled back into KSC through the Umbarg access tunnel. They attempted to return overland but got blocked by water rushing down out of the highlands from the storm & had to double back and finish the journey underground. Payload recovery was successful

low-altitude KerBalloon team have received a follow-up contract to their last mission. Scientists were pleased with the extra pollen data and will have two more balloons sent up in the region for even more data to continue to fine-tune their models

KB crew is back at KSC, reports the payload was recovered but damaged due to 1 of 2 chutes failing. Science data is intact however as designed in the event of only 1 good chute so mission remains a success while some new parts will need to be ordered

glad to have the low-alt crew back safe at KSC after another 400km+ traversal coming back from Kravass. As usual UTVs will need a good washing to clean off all the mud but ride was uneventful and no serious maintenance issues are in need of attention

the KerBalloon payload was shipped back to KSC so any data on it could be recovered before the weekend, however it was damaged beyond repair. Mission fail 🙁 Lead Scientist Cheranne has chided the team for not taking more precautions for recovering around mountainous terrain

with airship assistance, the low-alt KerBalloon crew have successfully located and recovered the payload, although it is damaged from rolling down a steep slope. When they return to KSC tomorrow, we'll see what can be recovered. They'll depart via UTV later today

unfortunately for the KB crew, the balloon got caught up in a gyre over this depression and the payload has landed within it, making it unrecoverable by UTV. An airship will be chartered for tomorrow to head out and deploy the crew so they can retrieve it

sticking to the highlands & known routes across the northern plains meant no troubles with sink holes and the UTVs carrying the low-alt KerBalloon crew have arrived safely in Kravass. They will set out again tomorrow for the trip north along the Wall to their release site

low-alt KB crew enjoyed their last traversal so much they jumped at the chance to do another, being resupplied by Kravass this time. They will set out next week after the UTVs finish up some maintenance

a large rainstorm and the ensuing soggy terrain delayed the low-altitude KerBalloon team on their 657km traversal back to KSC but all three UTVs have finally pulled back into campus after pulling each other out of the mud several times. Glad to have everyone back safely!

having just been resupplied once again as they pass south of Sheltered Rock, the low-altitude KB crew are continuing on their way home. Perfect weather greeted them for release earlier today, and the payload was recovered without issue

we did pick up a few minutes of low-alt balloon telemetry routed to us from Kravass as it neared its maximum 16.5km altitude before it was lost prior to envelope failure, which means the balloon was drifting northwards and fell below the horizon

KerBalloon crew out in the grasslands west of KSC have roamed within sight of the Umbarg aerial and checked in. We expect them to be rolling back into KSC through the Umbarg tunnel for safer overnight travel after they stop and drop off their data at KSA HQ

we arranged with an airship enroute from Kravass to Umbarg to contact our KerBalloon team out in the field and the captain reports they made it to the release site safely. Hopefully next year we have satellites in orbit to let us talk to such ground expeditions directly

to clarify - they *could* be done at the same time if one of the missions used an airship to get to the release site, recover and return but doing so would significantly cut profits from having to charter an airship vs. just putting fuel in our UTVs

MSV Tongjess has pulled into port in Umbarg with both our KerBalloon teams aboard and well. All three missions were successful in releasing and collecting their balloons, whose data will be sent to our contractors. Ker-ching! CFO Mortimer very pleased to ink some black

the low-altitude KerBalloon team have set out for bit.ly/Area_51KL2, about 233km of traversal that will take them roughly 5-6 hours to complete over two day cycles. They are geared up and ready to mountain climb if needed to retrieve the payload

local mission for the low-altitude bit.ly/KerBalloonProg… team will see them trek north to gather some data over the mountains while also performing a secondary contract mission of deploying seismic sensors in the area

Mortimer has closed a deal for the high-altitude bit.ly/KerBalloonProg… crew to receive a new contract and is still negotiating a contract on behalf of the low-altitude team as well. He's put a lot of pressure on himself to show a profit this month

MSV Tongjess pulled into port earlier today, they did indeed contend with some nasty weather on the return trip but release & recovery of the KerBalloon went off fine before that. Bob & Bill will be back at KSC with the payload tomorrow

although we had hoped to hear of MSV Tongjess arriving back at port by now, an extra day at sea was not unexpected if adverse weather impacted the mission somehow

Genesis & KerBalloon have both suspended contract work for next week so Val & Jeb can test out rudimentary flight control software while Bill & Bob prep high-altitude balloons in support of the Progeny launch

we've sent what's left of yesterday's envelope to KerBalloon for further analysis but Bob says it's most likely a minor defect, nothing obvious found. We're not treating this partial ascent failure as a problem yet, but hopefully KB can make improvements to their manufacturing

payload recovery has been successful & Lymun is heading back for KSC to drop it off w/ Bob, who's already been spending time inspecting previous envelope for any obvious defects
