Deuce Science Flight 7

Captain Jebediah and Commander Valentina head far west to survey Sector SH-4D0W, which could be a location for a future science outpost that would serve the region’s exploration needs

a new contract for bit.ly/GenesisProgram will send the Deuce out to perform an aerial survey of the source for the Kongo river, near a flat plain at the foot of some mountains where scientists want to place a research site for studies in the region

prep work underway ahead of sunrise so Val & Jeb can depart as soon as it is light enough for bit.ly/Sector_SH-4D0W, which is far enough away they'll need to divert to KGA coming back to lay over for the night cycle

good flying weather today, at least over KSC, as Deuce gets ready to taxi out to Rwy27 for departure. Despite the the ~1200km trip distance the aircraft is only needing to carry half its fuel capacity - nowhere else to divert but KGA

no issues on departure, Jeb took a shot out the window as they pass over the mountains at 4km ASL - Val is throttling back from climb (100%) to cruise power (80%), they will continue ascending but slowly, trading slightly worse fuel economy for faster overall speed

after sending the photo comms were lost due to the mountains, Deuce will not be traveling far enough to the north to get in touch with Kravass on its outbound leg so if we don't hear from them by sundown an airship at KGA is on standby to begin S&R operations

Val has just hailed Kravass as the Deuce clears the horizon. They report no troubles during the flight, fuel levels are good and they will take the standard approach

vectored around the nearby terrain there's still a low ridge line to pass over before short final, during which you can only see the threshold of the runway, as the rest is sloped down and not visible - so you better be lined up right!

Jeb has taxied in after landing, they will park the Deuce and hang out overnight to make the rest of the journey home next day cycle. We're also using this opportunity to ferry over some passengers...

a look at the contract survey area from 5.8km ASL. The Kongo river bubbles up above ground several kilometers from the base of the mountains but you can see the depression where it runs near the surface

this location was one of the few considered for an industrial surface colony but was deemed just too remote for regular living, shipping and production needs. As a research outpost however, it could become a science hub for this region

sun rises a bit later at KGA but Deuce is already prepped for flight, now carrying two extra bodies in the back - it's not their first flight but they aren't used to sitting back there

Jeb has signed off as they pass over the horizon on a direct course to KSC, no weather in the way to cause them to take an alternate route. They didn't fuel up at KGA, so aircraft is light and they're going to try for a new altitude record

Deuce is in sight of KSC & descending from 8.516km, which is indeed a new bit.ly/KSARecords. Doesn't beat the previous 8.447km record with as great a margin as the crew hoped for, but that was also set with a Deuce that weighed 567kg lighter

Jeb has rolled out onto a 10km final for Rwy27 after a nice long descent. We could provide this tracking data live when available but with intermittent comms during missions & no real requests from anyone to do so, it's a low priority
