Progeny Mk7-B Flight 1

After nearly a year since the Mk7-A and numerous delays the Progeny Mk7-B finally makes its first trip up into space to test engine recovery and re-use, new reaction wheels and general flight characteristics

As the first mission of a new vehicle, this dispatch includes all the design and development leading up to launch. To skip to the launch, click here.

say hello to the Progeny Mk7-A, the first iteration on the path to a cheaper small-sat option for deploying 0.35-0.625m payloads to low-Kerbin orbit (<250km). Unable to make orbit, this rocket will be a technology pathfinder. More info: kerbalspace.agency/?p=8963

we expect several iterations as it's already known the SRM-L will need to be replaced with a more powerful solid and the SRM-XL needs to revert back to its old core, which can output up to 145kN of thrust ASL for the larger payloads that will be carried

contract evaluation by the Progenitor team is well underway for a new 0.625m solid rocket booster that will either replace the 1st and 2nd stages of the Mk7 entirely or just replace the 0.35m second stage solid booster. This will become the basis for the Mk7-B

depending on how the next Mk7-A flight goes will help to decide whether to make the full Mk7-B stack 0.625m, which is the eventual Mk7 goal but we'd like to stick to the 0.35m 3rd stage parts that are currently being manufactured as much as possible for as long as possible

the existing 0.625m SRB by Umbra Space Industries has been incorporated into the first dual-segment SRB and will be worked into the design of the Progeny Mk7-B for launch in early 2020. Same surface area, so same thrust, but slightly better nozzle design for higher ISP

TL;DR - several recent minor oversights both in the rocketry & aircraft programs have begun to worry upper management that we are on course to make a catastrophic error in a future mission. Time to slow down before a major oversight occurs with horrible consequences

this was the 1st attempt to fire a recast booster, using the same casing from the test firing done back in Feb. While a significant setback for our future hopes of reusable SRBs it wasn't unexpected & plenty of data was collected to help rectify whatever issue(s) are uncovered

while we await word on recovery of the second stage, good news from closer downrange as the first stage booster is being hooked up for tow back to shore, where it will be hauled out then shipped off to Periapsis Co. to see whether it could possibly be re-used in the future

still awaiting word from the Aldeny, which will have a decent area to search for the beacon signal given currents could have carried the rocket several kilometers away from the estimated landing area by now. Post-launch operations here at KSC are wrapping up

we finally have word on the second stage - it was recovered, but not fully intact. The lower half of the fuel tank & engine were missing. Unfortunately engine recovery was a primary goal & thus we will have to mark this mission as a failure, but still mostly successful

rocket breakup messed with sensor wires running up the fuel tanks and crashed the flight computer attempting to access those sensors a few seconds after signal loss, so telemetry data is incomplete but as always still available for review: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

the booster cam was not recording video fast enough to really appreciate just how wibbly wobbly the rocket was on intial ascent, so to the ground tracking camera we go. Everyone is still amazed it managed to hold together, altho this likely contributed to the re-entry break-up

flight analysis report on the first progeny Mk7-B launch has been published: kerbalspace.agency/?p=11203 TL;DR - we might hot-fire 2nd stage this next flight to get higher apokee & guidance control tweaked to hopefully lessen roll-shake on initial ascent
