Low-Altitude Science Survey 42

After a previous civvie overflight back in 2017 scientists are still unsure weather this volcano is actually extinct, so gas concentrations are being gathered over Zone J-7438 for Tetragon Projects

low-alt KB team has signed a contract that will have them investigate gas levels in the air over an extinct volcano that is possibly only dormant. We helped look at it back in 2017 with a Civvie flight: kerbalspace.agency/ksa/?p=5144 twitter.com/KSA_MissionCtr…

the new UTV has arrived ahead of tomorrow's low-alt KerBalloon mission & Bill is wrenching with the rest of the HAB crew to get it converted from stock to properly suit our needs. This old photo shows them performing routine maintenance on our original fleet

low-alt KerBalloon crew just popped to the surface at Umbarg after taking the underground tunnel earlier today. They still have about 3 hours of overland traversal to cover the ~110km to the release site & should be able to send up the balloon after 3rd sunrise

standing by to receive signal from the KerBalloon as it rises over the horizon in sight of the Umbarg aerial, if all went well and the crew reached their release point around 2nd sunset and didn't have to stop and camp earlier on the route

acquisition of signal! Balloon is rising nominally through 3.5km on its way up to 16.5km, where internal pressure of the expanding gas will overcome the envelope integrity and burst, sending it plummeting back towards the ground. It will deploy chutes and land shortly after

rising at an average speed of 5m/s, the balloon reached maximum altitude a few minutes ago and telemetry data shows it is now descending under chutes after a brief free-fall back down to thicker air. KB crew should recover it shortly and be back at KSC later today

KerBalloon crew just rolled back into KSC, report the new UTV handled itself superbly and the payload was recovered without issue. Time for the low-altitude crew managers to get back to the contract negotiations next week...
